<% pageTitle="Apartment for rent with Don Quixote in Guanajuato, Mexico" %>
23 Oct 2005, Stained Glass

Much has happened since my last update. The big news is that the apartments are finished, the student apartment is currently rented, and the larger apartment is ready for furniture.

I've posted a video, 2:30 minutes, about 18MB (not recommended for slow connections. You may want to right click the link, and use the 'Save Target As...' to save it to your machine before playing). Here's the link to the video.

My pet project, a stained glass window which sits between the kitchen and bathroom, has been completed. It is a picture of Don Quixote, peering through the arched window.

For most people, especially those peeking into the apartment from the street, he is a face in the kitchen window peeking at them. The fact that he also is watching you in the bathroom, is pretty much a bonus in my book.

I was inspired by my wife who wanted a classic colonial design, with a twist. The design was an act of love by a clearly misunderstood romantic - much like Don Quixote himself.

As a footnote, Cervantes, the author in 1605 of Don Quixote, had the full name of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Once complete, the main entrance to the casa grande will be moved from Callejon Barranca (ravine alley) to Callejon Saavedra - the side of the house from which the Don peers. He looks through the obscuring glass from 400 years in the past to watch people navigating the cobbled streets of Guanajuato, which itself was founded 51 years earlier, in 1554.

The new entryway is well on its way to completion. The historical commission gave it's blessing to the change to the facade of the old house. The grand new entry will be the largest single cosmetic change to the home.
